Fresh rounds of violence were reported in West Bengal's Howrah district on Saturday during protests demanding the arrest of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her remarks on the Prophet Mohammad.
In several other places including Delhi, Saharanpur, Lucknow, Hyderabad and Ranchi, police registered FIRs and rounded up suspects over Friday's violent incidents. The Jharkhand government announced a special investigation team (SIT) to probe Friday's incidents in Ranchi where two people died due to bullet injuries.
In Delhi, the police registered a case under Section 188 (disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant) over Friday's protest outside the Jama Masjid, deputy commissioner (central) Shweta Chauhan said. Further investigation is underway, the official added.
In Ranchi, authorities also imposed Section 144 in 12 police station areas, suspended Internet services and deployed more than 2,500 police and rapid action force personnel in sensitive areas.
Twelve policemen and as many others were injured in the violence, said a senior police official. One policeman has sustained bullet injuries, he added.
At Panchla in Howrah district, several houses and shops were set on fire Saturday. Several police personnel were injured in stone pelting.
Police resorted to lathi-charge and lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. However, tension still prevailed in the area Saturday evening.
Police have arrested more than 70 rioters in Bengal in the past two days, government sources said. Internet services have been suspended and Section 144 imposed in and around the stretches of National Highways and railway stations in the Uluberia subdivision of Howrah till June 15.
The state government replaced Howrah (Rural) superintendent of police Soumya Roy with Swati Bhangalia. Additional Kolkata police commissioner Pravin Tripathi has been appointed as Howrah commissioner of police.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee said stringent action would be taken against those disrupting peace.
In Uttar Pradesh, 237 people have been arrested across nine cities until Saturday evening, including 68 in Prayagraj which witnessed heavy stone pelting by protestors on the police.
A person named Javed Ahmed, alleged to be the "mastermind" behind the Prayagraj violence, has been taken into custody, police said. SSP Prayagraj Ajay Kumar said they found a lot of "content" on his phone and that he, along with his daughter who studies in JNU, was often seen to be propagating "mischievous" activities.
