First ministerial visit to Russia since Ukraine war

Minister for health, chemicals and fertilisers Mansukh Mandaviya will be travelling to Russia the coming week for the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). This will be the first visit by an Indian minister to Russia since the start of the Ukraine war on February 24.

The 25th edition of the economic forum will take place from June 15 to 18. Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov had visited India early April in what was the first ministerial visit from Russia to India since February 24. Mandaviya will represent India at the high-profile event, ET has learnt.

Egypt will be the guest country this year at the event which will be addressed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. There will be special focus on Africa and Latin America, besides Asean, in this year's SPIEF.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief guest at the 2017 edition of the economic forum.

Advisor to the Russian President and executive secretary of the SPIEF organising committee Anton Kobyakov has said, "We are seeing high levels of interest from the international community in platforms for dialogue like ours, and a number of countries have already expressed interest in sending representative delegations to SPIEF 2022."

India has finalised critical supply of fertilisers from Russia under a barter agreement. Russia will supply crop nutrients via a barter system. Russian importers will exchange fertilisers for various Indian commodities, including tea, raw materials and auto parts.
