(ANSA) – ROME, JUL 12 – COVID-19 infections among Italy's prison population have quadrupled in the last seven days, sources said Tuesday.
Coronavirus cases rose from 159 on July 4 to 643 on July 11, they said.
However, this is far below the peak of 2,586 cases reached at the start of the year, out of total prison population of 54,255.
Cases among warders have also risen, from 305 out of 36,939 a week ago to 618 yesterday, the sources said.
Only one inmate is in hospital, while all the others are asymptomatic.
